Kathleen Mary Martin

Kathleen Mary Martin passed peacefully from this world on Sunday, December 26, 2021, in the loving care of the nurses, sisters, and deacons of Chateau de Notre Dame. After spending much of her life traveling and living in Lafayette, she returned to her devoted sisters, daughter, grand daughter and son-in-law in New Orleans to live out her final days surrounded by her loved ones. Kathy and her family were very grateful for this special time together, which allowed everyone to say all that needed to be said, listen to lots of holiday music and enjoy some of her favorite Christmas classics like the Grinch. Kathy was an entertainer at heart, which was evident from a young age. She was born in New Orleans, LA on September 23, 1950, spending most of her early life in Arabi, LA where she sang, danced, and acted in local theatrical productions while growing up. After graduation, she lived “on the road” (as she liked to say) enjoying all of the peace, love and happiness the 1960’s had to offer. Soon after, she met Kris Sherman, a fellow musician, and the couple had one daughter, Kea Sherman. Their small family ultimately settled in Lafayette, LA where Kathy sang with several bands; however, her time as the lead singer of the Fenders was most enduring. In her second act in life, Kathy returned to college and then earned a master’s degree in social work from Louisiana State University. She found purpose in helping others navigate life’s difficulties. Kathy’s larger than life personality and musical talents ensure that she will be forever remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her. The family would like to extend their special appreciation to Deacon Uriel Durr, and all who cared for Kathy’s body and spirit at Chateau Notre Dame and with Notre Dame Hospice. She is preceded in death by her father, Robert A. Martin; her mother, Doris Rose Fredricks; her nephew, Cody Martin; and her aunt, Rita Bouterie. She is survived by her one child, Kea Sherman, her son-in-law, Neal A. Bodenheimer, their daughter Hayden J. Bodenheimer: her devoted and loving sisters, Melanie Fernandez (Rickey) and Barbara Puderer, (Dennis), as well their brother, Robert Martin Jr. (Jill). She was Aunt Kathy to Tonya Taaffe Bode (Chase), Jeff Taaffe (Mary Claire), Kaitlyn Martin. Family and friends will hold a celebration of life in the coming weeks.
